Law Day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 to create a day dedicated to the observance of our legal system and government. In his proclamation on February 3, 1958, he urged those in the legal profession to promote and participate in celebrating this day. In 1961, Congress officially designated May 1 as Law Day, which continues internationally today and is celebrated throughout the month of May. In honor of this day, we would like to share some history on Coker Law and its founder, Howard Coker.
Howard’s passion for the law began at a young age and was inspired by Perry Mason. He was captivated by the show and announced that he would go on to become a trial lawyer. He never budged from this conviction and went on to law school and began his career as an assistant state attorney. He noted his mother was very supportive and proud of him for knowing what he wanted and working so hard to achieve it.
The firm began in 1976 on the same block in which it resides today; however, we have not always been in this space. The firm was previously located in a smaller building, but Howard always admired the architecture of the current building. In 1998, the firm outgrew its previous location, and he was finally able to move the firm to his dream location!
Today, Howard’s vision for a brighter space in this magnificent building is finally coming to fruition with our office renovation. He is pleased with how it is turning out and the way our first floor has progressed, making the office a much brighter space.
However, most of all, Howard’s favorite thing about the firm is the people. For Howard, working as a plaintiff’s attorney is rewarding because we are the “difference-maker” in changing people’s lives during their challenging times when we bring their cases to the justice they deserve.
At the office, he loves how the team feels like family and how many of the employees have remained with the firm for decades! As with any family, there’s often cause for celebration, so here at Coker Law, we have monthly birthday celebrations and frequent team outings with fun activities, such as bowling or Topgolf, to appreciate the team’s hard work and efforts.
Mr. Coker has truly created a workplace culture where people genuinely love their jobs and co-workers. We work hard every day for our clients because they’re part of our extended family too. On Law Day and every day, we celebrate the role the law plays in bringing order and justice to our lives.
