Which Toys Are Making The Naughty and Nice List This Year

Posted By: Coker Law

The holidays will be here before you know it, which means it’s just the right time to find that perfect present for your child. Be sure to do your research and stay up to date on toy and product recalls to ensure your child’s top toy choice isn’t on this year’s naughty list.

Top Toys for 2019

According to Good Housekeeping, the top toys this year will be interactive toys that respond to your child’s touch and voice. Good Housekeeping is a great resource for parents because they use engineers and analysts to check that your child’s toy meets all the safety standards, including the shatter test and pinch point check. Toys are then rated on ease of assembly, as well as durability, and assessed by a team of nearly 100 children. The top toys that made the nice list this year are:

  • Pinkfong Baby Shark TabletChildren love the “Baby Shark” song, so who better to help them practice their 1,2,3’s and ABC’S than baby shark himself? This toy “tablet” offers a variety of play modes for hours of fun while learning. (Under $25)
  • Disney Frozen Elsa’s Ice Palace by Little PeopleThe interactive castle brings Elsa and Olaf to life with lights, sounds and surprises for your child to uncover. Frozen is all the rage, and this toy gives your children a chance to use their imagination while listening to Elsa belt out “Let It Go” over and over again. (Under $50)
  • ImaginextDC Super Friends Transforming Batmobile R/C: This toy gives your child the chance to protect Gotham City with a tricked-out, remote control Batmobile. Drive it around until the bad guys strike, then send it into battle mode – opening up to twice its size with even more lights and sounds. (Under $100)
  • Our Generation Let It Roll – Retro Bowling Alley SetParents love this toy because it comes fully assembled, ready for your child to play. This retro bowling alley has an interactive lane and pins, balls, score sheets, food, a vintage cash register and more. Your child can even pick which dolls they want to use, collecting and swapping them out as they go. (Over $100)

Toys That Didn’t Make The Cut

One of the missions of the Consumer Product Safety Commission is to ensure that toys are compliant with the safety standards set by Congress. If the toy is deemed unsafe, whether it’s for lead levels, toxicity, choking hazard, or flammability, a recall will be announced and the toy will be taken off the shelves. Here are three toys that made the naughty list this year:

  • Disney’s Forky Plush: The Forky plush toy was recalled because the googly eyes can detach and pose a choking hazard to children.
  • Power Wheels Barbie Camper: Fisher Price had to recall these battery-operated vehicles after receiving numerous complaints that it kept running even after the foot pedal was released, possibly sending your child into dangerous territory.
  • Bullseye’s Playground Wooden Toy VehiclesThere were multiple reports of wheels detaching from these wooden toy vehicles, posing a choking hazard to children.

Always make sure the toy is suited to your child’s age and developmental level, doesn’t contain any toxic ingredients, won’t break into small pieces, and won’t overheat. Be sure to read Coker Law’s tips on how to pick a safe, fun toy for your child before you hit the stores.
